TEST METHOD FOR HARDNESS IN INDUSTRIAL WATER
BACKGROUND OF THE TEST:
Since hardness in water comprises of Calcium and
Magnesium compounds with the combination of
numerous anions and this hardness of water is
considered undesirable when exceeding particular
limits of a treatment system and has to be NIL for boiler
applications. So hardness test plays an important role
for overall water treatment management.
Nuclotrasis offers user friendly test method with ease of
handling the relevant reagents and other equipments
used in the analysis. For determination of hardness in
industrial water, this test relies on volumetric titration
between hardness causing Calcium and Magnesium ions
in water sample as titrand and a standard complexing
agent as titrant while the required reagents are used
through easy handling glassware.
REAGENTS/EQUIPMENTS/APPARATUS:
• Provided 5 mL & 10 mL marked glass vial (Item
Code: 02-01)
• NUCLOTRASIS Total Hardness Test Buffer
Solution (Item Code: 01-08-1)
• NUCLOTRASIS Total Hardness Test Indicator
(Item Code: 01-08-2)
• NUCLOTRASIS Calcium Hardness Test Buffer
Solution (Item Code: 01-08-3)
• NUCLOTRASIS Calcium Hardness Test Indicator
(Item Code: 01-08-4)
• NUCLOTRASIS Hardness Test Titrant Solution
(Item Code: 01-08-5)
SAMPLE COLLECTION & PREPARATION
• Make sure to immediately analyze the sample
after collection of sample.
• Ensure to collect sample in a suitable and
designated bottle for a specific sample.
• Ensure to conduct this test at room temperatures.
TEST PROCEDURE:
1. We recommend selecting the sample volume in
the provided glass vial (Item Code: 02-01) based
on your expected/desired range from the chart
below.
TOTAL HARDNESS DETERMINATION
2. Add 10 drops of NUCLOTRASIS Total Hardness
Test Buffer Solution (Item Code: 01-08-1) and
gently mix.
3. Then add 2-3 drops of NUCLOTRASIS Total
Hardness Test Indicator (Item Code: 01-08-2)
and mix well. Reddish color will appear if
hardness is present in the sample.
4. If hardness is present, titrate the sample drop
wise while counting number of drops of
NUCLOTRASIS Hardness Test Titrant
Solution (Item Code: 01-08-5) with
gentle mixing until SKY BLUE color
solution is obtained.
5. Note the number of drops added and
multiply with multiplication factor mentioned
in above chart against selected sample volume.
6. Report Total Hardness result as ppm of CaCO3.
CALCIUM HARDNESS DETERMINATION
2. Add 10 drops of NUCLOTRASIS Calcium
Hardness Test Buffer Solution (Item Code: 01-
08-3) and gently mix.
3. Then add a pinch of NUCLOTRASIS Calcium
Hardness Test Indicator (Item Code: 01-08-4)
and mix well. Reddish color will appear if
calcium hardness is present in the sample
4. If calcium hardness is present, titrate the
sample drop wise while counting number of
drops of NUCLOTRASIS Hardness Test Titrant
Solution (Item Code: 01-08-5) with gentle
mixing until ROYAL BLUE color solution is
obtained.
5. Note the number of drops added and multiply
with multiplication factor mentioned in above
chart against selected sample volume.
6. Report Calcium Hardness result as ppm of
CaCO3.
MAGNESIUM HARDNESS DETERMINATION
Mg Hardness = T. Hardness - Ca-Hardness
